The purpose of Working on Gifted Issues (WOGI) as
defined in the Florida State Board of Education Rules Pertaining to Special
Programs – the Challenge Grant Program for the Gifted – is to encourage public
schools to implement exemplary programs which challenge gifted students.
Emphasis is placed on the following:
- improving the quality of existing programs
- initiating a model or demonstration program
- expanding student participation in existing programs
Funding for this grant is provided by the Florida
Department of Education, Bureau of Exceptional Education and Student Services.
GOALS
The focus for the 2007-08 WOGI Project includes the
following:
- establishing and monitoring pilot programs
designed to address disproportionality and the role that the
screening process plays;
- the completion of the gifted endorsement
course modules for use by districts, universities and other
instructional centers, with emphasis placed upon development of
on-line delivery options;
- collaboration with university personal
statewide to broaden the awareness level of the endorsement modules
and share dialog concerning gifted education;
- the development of materials, technical
assistance and training to support the Florida Framework for K-12
Gifted Learners to be used by educators in the development of
measurable goals for gifted students Educational Plans and for use
throughout the state by program administrators as they develop and
expand program opportunities for students who are gifted;
- the formation of a state gifted advisory
board to make recommendations for appropriate services for Florida
students who gifted;
- committees charged with the development of
advanced descriptors for the Sunshine State Standards in various
content areas;
- the finalization and dissemination of a
Handbook for Gifted Education;
- the continuation of a set of regional
meetings designed as a forum for parent of gifted students to
explore common issues of concern; and
- the continuation of the annual spring
statewide institute to provide a forum for sharing the Project
Outcomes.
The WOGI Staff offers technical and financial assistance
to school districts interested in piloting a new procedure or screening
instrument to help reduce disproportionality. The WOGI Project also provides
opportunities for networking and professional development, and materials and
resources to support the grant goals. The WOGI Spring Institute offers a
culminating experience highlighting the progress of the pilot sites,
opportunities for sharing and problem solving, and exposure to new practices and
procedures from experts in the field.
